Man charged with dumping dead cattle in Macleay River

A MAN has been charged with dumping dead cattle in the Macleay River.

The 79-year-old is due to return to Kempsey Local Court on Thursday 2 October to face two counts of pollute waters.

Police say that between May and August, deceased cattle were observed floating in McCabes Drain – a waterway running through properties on Summer Island about 15km north-east of Kempsey.

On 7 August, police attached to the Rural Crime Prevention Team were notified and commenced inquiries.

About 9.40am the following day, police allegedly observed a man transporting a dead cow and placing it into the Macleay River.

After speaking with the man, police are alleging the animal was one of several placed into McCabes Drain and the Macleay River in recent weeks.
