FIFTEEN-YEAR-OLD Nambucca Heads resident Matthew Jeffery is making a name for himself on the Australian chess scene following a string of impressive performances in major tournaments held in Sydney and Brisbane.
In April Matthew travelled to Sydney to compete in the Burwood ACF Tournament Classical (April).
The two-day event attracted strong competition, with Matthew finishing in first place after recording seven wins from eight games.
His success continued the following day at the Burwood Saturday Rapid Tournament, where he placed second and took home $250 in prize money.
Not content to rest on his achievements, Matthew then travelled to Brisbane to compete in the 2026 Churchie International, which commenced on Friday, 1 May.
The prestigious tournament attracted 180 players and was contested over four days.
Matthew finished in an impressive equal 33rd position overall and was equal first among all unrated players competing in the event.
Matthew’s parents recently spoke about a ‘light bulb moment’ that occurred on a family holiday to Adelaide.
“We had watched Matthew play at a high level online for some time, so when he discovered a tournament was being held during our visit to Adelaide and asked to compete, we were keen for him to have the opportunity,” his parents said.
“He played exceptionally well and showed a remarkable understanding of the game.
“His younger brother, Ethan, is also showing plenty of promise as a competitive chess player.”
Matthew credits local chess clubs for helping him develop and refine his skills.
He attends the Nambucca Heads Chess Club, which meets at the Nambucca Heads RSL Club from 4pm on the last Monday of each month and the Coffs Harbour Chess Club, which meets at Sawtell RSL Club from 6pm on Tuesdays.
When asked what he enjoys most about chess, Matthew said he liked the problem-solving.
“It’s kind of like a big puzzle that you try to solve or simplify,” he said.
For anyone considering taking up the game, Matthew has a simple message.
“Yes, do it because it is fun and easy to pick up.”
