Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club

LARGER than life Andrew Donovan has some new threads for his colourful wardrobe after storming home for a rarish victory at the Nambucca Heads Island Golf Course.

In what proved to be the last comp round for the week thanks to a rain bomb, the 16-marker was on fire around the back, with a four over par 38 off the stick.

That was enough for 35 points and a win on countback from Graham Weary (8 handicap) in the Nambucca RSL Dolphin Day medley stableford on Thursday, 31 July.

Donovan wins the coveted Dolphin Day shirt, while Weary – only one over par after crossing the bridge himself – had to make do with the Div 1 honour.

Lynette McMurray (14) from the Everglades Country Club was runner-up with 34 points.

Bruce Mason (18) had five pars and eight sixes in his round of 33 points to give him victory in Div 2.

Runner-up was Craig Mattick (18) who showed he’d be a great fourball partner with seven pars and 31 points.

Once-was-Saturday now a Thursday specialist, Dave Mattacott won the pin on 15, Ken Klem on 7, and Deidre Fletcher on 8. Andy MacKinnon topped up his TAB account with the $80 Pro Pin on 18 and Matt Dyer scored the Pizza This Pizza That voucher on 13. Thomas Wattison dunked the Ecomist longest putt on the 1st.

Deidre Fletcher (10) continues to wear the carpet out on her way to the prize table, carding 36 points to win the women’s stableford Div 1 on Wednesday, 30 July.

Fletcher came to grief on the muddy 10th with a triple before reeling off eight straight pars in the run to the clubhouse for 80 off the stick.

Lisa Guest (16) was runner-up with 33 points, who had six pars after a scratchy opening.

In Div 2, Lillian Lukins (28) had 33 points for the win and had as many pars as she has ‘Ls’ in her name.

Kay McGoldrick (27) was next best with 30 points.

Pins on the 8th were claimed by Sue Brooks, Robyn Dyer and Mary Bysouth, with Marilyn McNally nearest on 13 for the pizza and Lisa Guest nabbing the $25 Pro Pin on the last.

Coffs Harbour’s Wendy Johnstone (12) won the Mid North Coast Vets medley stableford on Tuesday, 29 July.

Johnstone birdied the temporarily not-so-long 16th par 5 on her way to 35 points to edge Bellingen’s Maurie Tate on a countback.

Matthew Lark took the pin on 8, Robert Potts the pizza on 13 and Paul Ryan the Pro Pin on 18.

Catchya on The Island, where warmer, longer days and August winds will surely start getting the upper hand in Moistville.
