Salvos’ Walk for the Hood brings community together for the Red Shield Appeal

THE Nambucca River Church (NRC) Salvos hosted “Walk for the Hood,” on Sunday 24 May, as part of the National 2026 Salvation Army Red Shield Appeal.

More than just a walk, the event was an opportunity for the local community to come together, enjoy a morning of fun and connection, and raise vital funds to support individuals and families in need across the Nambucca Valley.

“Every dollar raised through the Red Shield Appeal stays within the local community, helping provide practical assistance, care, and hope to those who need it most, including several local Salvation Army initiatives,” NRC  facilitator Stefo Kay told News Of The Area.

This year’s funding will support Weekly Salvos Emergency Assistance, providing financial support and counselling to local individuals and families in crisis; Salvos Kids in the Kitchen, a program for primary school-aged children that teaches foundational cooking skills, kitchen hygiene, and safe food practices, with a strong focus on preparing simple, healthy meals using fresh produce; and Salvos Christmas Cheer, an annual initiative supporting local families during the festive season through food hampers, toys, and gifts for children.

“Despite wet weather in the lead-up to the event, the rain cleared just an hour before the walk began, setting the stage for a fantastic community turnout,” Stefo Kay said.

“Dressed head-to-toe in red, walkers, runners, families, children on scooters, and even four-legged friends made their way from Bellwood Park to the V-Wall and back, truly keeping the fun in fundraising.”

The event featured prizes for categories including Best Dressed in Red, Biggest Team, and Most Generous Donation, with a special shout-out to Inspiration Real Estate for their support.

The NRC Salvos expressed gratitude to the many local businesses that helped make the event possible through generous donations and community support, including Macksville Chemist, Macksville Shoe Barn, Salt Therapy Studio, Scoop Dogs, Denos Barber, Ember+Time Cafe, Woolworths Macksville, Macksville Country Club, FoodWorks Macksville, Salvos Store, Nambucca RSL, Wharf Street Cafe, and V-Wall Pavilion.
