More than a band, a community tradition 106 years strong

FOR more than a century, the Nambucca District Band has been entertaining local audiences, and the 106-year-old community institution is now inviting more people to discover the enjoyment of brass band music – whether as listeners or future members.

The band was once again in fine form on Saturday 27 June, providing live entertainment at the Macksville Arts, Crafts and Car Boot Markets held at the Macksville Showgrounds.

The performance added to the lively atmosphere, with the acoustic sounds carrying throughout the market grounds.

The music encouraged visitors to slow down, browse the stalls and enjoy spending time with family, friends and the local community.

One market-goer summed up the band’s popularity, telling News Of The Area that, “the band is the highlight of the markets”.

Audiences were treated to a broad repertoire spanning modern music, soft rock, pop, jazz, country and marching favourites.

The program included music by Neil Diamond, an energetic rendition of the Raiders March and even Michael Jackson’s Thriller, demonstrating the band’s versatility and appeal across generations.

As one of the oldest community organisations in the Nambucca Valley, the Nambucca District Band continues to preserve an important musical tradition while embracing contemporary favourites that appeal to today’s audiences.

The band is now encouraging new members of all ages to become involved.

Whether someone is a school student wanting to learn a brass instrument or percussion, an adult looking to take up music for the first time, or a former musician who hasn’t picked up an instrument since their school days, the band offers a welcoming and supportive environment.

Members say brass bands provide far more than just an opportunity to make music.

Playing in a band builds friendships, encourages teamwork and gives people the chance to perform for their local community.

Research has also shown that participating in community music can enhance physical wellbeing, reduce stress, increase resilience and support positive mental health.

Residents who are curious about brass band music are also encouraged to simply come along to one of the band’s upcoming performances and experience the music for themselves.

The Nambucca District Band will next perform at the Collectors Fair at Coffs Harbour Showgrounds on Saturday 25 July from 10am.

Further performances are scheduled for the Combined Bands performance at Coffs Harbourside Markets on Sunday 16 August from 10am to 2pm, the Macksville Arts and Crafts Markets at Macksville Showgrounds on Saturday 22 August from 10am, and the Lions Markets at Nambucca Heads Plaza on Sunday 6 September from 10am.

Weekly rehearsals are held every Tuesday evening from 6.30pm at the Macksville Senior Citizens Hall.
