Jim goes shopping with his horses and carriage

THE weather was perfect last Thursday for Jim McKenna to bring his well-travelled horses, Clancy and Harry, and his charming classic carriage into Macksville to shop.

Along with his trusty offsider Toby Baber, Jim and his well-appointed team set off from Mary Boulton Cottage at 10am to tour Macksville’s town centre.

The mission was planned as a ‘soft’ protest at the current high price of fuel and a great opportunity to show off his immaculate rig and steeds.

First stop was at the rear of Mitre 10, where the staff cleared the way into the drive-through loading bay. Toby welcomed his young daughter Charlotte for a short ride with the team, with Mum Jade keeping a watchful eye.

From there they cruised around to the Star Hotel, collecting critical supplies, then round the corner at the traffic lights into Wallace Street.

Both automobile and pedestrian traffic were thrilled and respectful while witnessing the novel spectacle.

“This event is great training for this pair (Clancy and Harry)”, Jim said,

Jim’s visit was interactive in many ways, from the road traffic to the young and older locals keen to take photos and ask questions about Jim, his horses and their adorable carriage.

Many had the opportunity to climb on board for a memorable shot.

By midday Jim’s team was parked in front of the local food store, where staff had secured a safe parking space and delivered supplies.

Onlookers were thrilled to be part of the unusual event.

Food store manager Ben Maloney said it was great to have Mr McKenna bring his team to town.

“We usually deliver groceries to his Allgomera property,” Mr Maloney said.

Jim is planning more outings with Clancy and Harry.
