A FASCINATING new exhibition entitled ‘Encounters’, featuring 12 local artists, is now on display at Art Space Urunga.
Members were invited well in advance of the opening day to prepare collections of their works for display.
“The concept was for the artist to have a direct relationship with the artwork rather than using, say, photographic reference, even if the photo is taken by the artist,” coordinator Chris Wilson said.
“I could say ‘plein air’ but it also works with still life or portraits done directly in front of the subject in the workspace.
“Photography is obviously not affected as it is direct by its nature, but for 3D work I asked for works which represent something important to the artist.”
Artists provided an interesting variety of preparatory sketches, journal entries, descriptive statements and other materials which demonstrated their connection to the artworks and are displayed with artworks.
“People are often fascinated by artists (so clever and mysterious!) and want to know how these talented folk do what they do,” Chris said.
“Speaking for myself as an artist, I feel the need to recalibrate and refresh my practice and have decided this is a good way of doing it.”
Artists include Chris Wilson, Crystal Tate, Pete Gaily, Susan Romyn, May Southgate, David Southgate, Sarah Wade, Tom Maxwell and ‘The Collective Four’; Jackie Lee, Shelly O’Keefe, Philip Senior and Kathy Taylor.
“It is intriguing to see how the different artists developed their bodies of work, from sketches to fabulous paintings,” exhibiting artist and long-time member Pete Gaily said.
The exhibition runs till September 12, followed by the highly contested ‘Small Sculpture Prize’, which attracted entries from every state and territory in Australia.
