DR Dengate suggests that I should go to Google, which would show a correlation between atmospheric carbon dioxide and temperature (‘Use fossil fuels to build renewable energy economy’, NOTA, 28/8/26).
However, facts speak louder than Google.
The fact is that world average temperature declined from 1880 to 1910.
It again declined from 1940 to 1976, so much so that, at the time, an ice age was being predicted.
All the while, atmospheric carbon dioxide continued to increase.
If there were a correlation, the temperature should have continued to rise.
His claim that “tens of thousands of scientists over the last 50 years” have supported a correlation between average world temperature and atmospheric carbon dioxide is irrelevant.
Many scientists over the years have believed many things which were subsequently proved to be incorrect, including that the sun rotated around the earth.
Given similar claims regarding what scientists believe and which have subsequently been debunked, it is incumbent on Dr Dengate to provide the names and qualifications of these scientists, including what they actually believe.
It could be that they just support the view that carbon dioxide reflects infrared radiation, to which I agree.
But I believe the miniscule amount in the atmosphere is insufficient to affect temperature, and the facts seem to support this.
