THE COVID pandemic and associated lockdowns changed the face of many business models, workplaces, and even volunteer organisations.
The Nambucca District Rescue Squad was disbanded during the first COVID lockdown and this led to the squad ceasing operations.
Some of these members had served the Valley for half a century but, when the chapter closed, they did not have an opportunity to gather, celebrate their achievements or even say farewells.
The organisation has therefore decided to reunite for “a proper send-off,” according to Stuart Holmes, former president of the squad and volunteer of 24 years.
“After the local Nambucca District Rescue Squad VRA was forced to disband during the first lockdown of the COVID pandemic, the squad decided to cease operations in the Nambucca Valley,” Mr Holmes recalled.
“The members of the squad who had served the community were never given the opportunity to get together for a proper send off.
“The Volunteer Rescue Association Squad that had served this Valley for over half a century just seemed to vanish. “To rectify this it has been decided to get together for a final hurrah.’’
All past members of the Volunteer Rescue Association Squad and their partners are invited to a reunion on Thursday, 15 October 2026 at the Star Hotel Macksville, starting at approximately 6-6.30 pm.
People who would like to attend should contact Wendy on 0437 477 544 by 1 October to advise of their attendance.
“If you know of any past members that may have left the area and may wish to come, we would appreciate it if you could pass on the invitation to attend,” Mr Holmes said.
“We hope to see a huge crowd to help celebrate this once-great volunteer community service.”
