Lena Crompton turns 100

A CENTURY of life, including military service, family, travel and decades of community involvement, will be celebrated this month as Nambucca Heads resident and Army veteran Lena Crompton reaches the remarkable milestone of her 100th birthday.

Lena, who turns 100 on 11 June, has witnessed enormous change throughout her lifetime, from the hardships of the Great Depression and World War II through to the modern era.

Born in Trangie, NSW, in 1926, Lena’s arrival into the world was far from straightforward. Due to complications during her birth, she was not expected to survive and was christened almost immediately.

However, Lena had other ideas and went on to enjoy a long and fulfilling life spanning an entire century.

During World War II, Lena was working in a fruit shop in Dubbo when she decided to enlist in the Australian Army.

She joined the postal service division and initially served in Sydney before being transferred to Perth.

While in Western Australia, Lena worked on deceased and prisoner-of-war records, carrying out an important role supporting Australia’s wartime efforts.

She served for two years before being discharged at the end of the war.

Not long afterwards, she married her late husband Neville, and together they built a loving family, raising three children and sharing a passion for travel throughout their lives.

In 1984, the family moved to Nambucca Heads, where Lena quickly became involved in the local community.

She joined a garden club, a group she still attends today, and remained active in the sport of croquet until the age of 99.

When News Of The Area asked Lena about the secret to her longevity, her answer was characteristically straightforward.

“Well, I never smoked or drank and pretty much behaved myself so that may have had something to do with it,” she said.

Reflecting on what makes for a happy life, Lena offered a simple message that remains as relevant today as ever.

“People need to show respect for each other and strive to get on with each other.”

Family members describe Lena as a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and friend, whose positive outlook and strong values helped guide generations.

As she prepares to celebrate her 100th birthday, Lena remains a cherished member of the Nambucca community and a living link to a significant chapter in Australia’s history.

Lena will mark the occasion surrounded by family, celebrating a life defined by resilience, service, community involvement and an enduring appreciation for the people around her.
