THE Nambucca Heads Offshore Fishing Club is casting a net far and wide seeking anglers for its inaugural bream fishing competition, to be held on the weekend of 15-16 August.
There will be a special $500 prize for the longest bream caught, as well as prizes for the largest fish caught across a range of categories over the two days.
Competitors must be financial members of the club.
Club publicity officer Richard Todd said the competition entry fee was $35 for adults and $5 for juniors, which included 12 months’ club membership.
Membership sign-on day is 14 June between 10am-2pm at the fishing club clubhouse, located at the Shelley Beach boat ramp.
Todd hopes the bream fishing competition will become an annual event, boosting club numbers and attracting keen fishers to the Nambucca Valley over the August weekend.
“As they say, you have to be in it to win it,” Todd said. “Through the competition we’re hoping to attract some younger members. Our junior members are going to be the lifeblood of the club.
“This competition will help to promote the club and will also put a bit back into the community.”
Todd said the $500 prize for the longest bream was chosen because not all anglers had a suitable boat for ocean fishing.
“Not everybody can get outside, so this means people who fish in the river or from the beach can still enter the competition and have a chance,” Todd said.
Fish weigh-in (not gilled or gutted) will be between 3pm and 4pm on 15 August and at 1pm on 16 August at the Shelley Beach clubhouse. A free barbecue will follow the Sunday weigh-in.
