Valla community rallies for mental health

ONE of the Nambucca Valley’s most anticipated community events took place under clear blue skies recently  with organisers hailing the second annual Valla Gift a success and predicting it would become a permanent fixture on the community calendar.

Held at Anderson Park, Valla Beach on 6 June, the event attracted a strong turnout of competitors, spectators, volunteers and sponsors, all coming together to raise awareness and funds for mental health initiatives.

Organisers were pleased with the community support shown throughout the day, which featured perfect weather, plenty of family friendly activities and a strong focus on encouraging conversations around mental health.

All proceeds raised from the event will be donated to the Black Dog Institute, supporting research, education and programs aimed at improving mental health outcomes for Australians.

The event’s origins date back to last year when two local friends challenged each other to a race to determine who was the faster runner.

What started as a friendly contest soon evolved into a community gathering, with food, refreshments and fundraising activities added to support mental health causes.

This year, approximately 15 local businesses supported the event through sponsorships, donations and practical assistance.

“The Valla Beach Tavern got behind this great event because men too often keep quiet about their mental health struggles and an event like this lets them know that it is OK to talk about it and their community supports them,” Nicolas Jones, a Valla Beach Tavern Manager, told News Of The Area.

“Some of us have had our lives affected by mental health and men need to know that it is ok to reach out as too many men think that letting their mates know they are struggling is a weakness.”

Visitors enjoyed a sausage sizzle, steak sandwiches and other refreshments throughout the day, while children and adults took part in a variety of races.

Traditional sack races proved particularly popular, giving younger participants a glimpse of the simple outdoor fun enjoyed by previous generations.

The feature race of the day was won by local man Ben Hamblion, who crossed the finish line in a nail-biting finish ahead of Valla Beach’s Dale O’Brien.

Following the racing action, celebrations continued at the Valla Beach Tavern, where live music provided entertainment for participants and spectators well into the afternoon.
