Work on Sauls Dairy culvert hits new milestone, despite weeks of rain

CONSTRUCTION of a massive culvert beneath Boat Harbour Road at Sauls Dairy has reached a key milestone with the installation of 22 pre-fabricated concrete culvert units.

Around 75 cubic metres of concrete was laid to build aprons to secure the 22 units. Next, wing walls will be formed and reinforced, before more concrete is poured, followed by final backfilling.

“The sheer scale of the 34 metre wide by 8.5m deep hole, and the site’s sloped topography, make for an impressive construction site,” said David Maloney, Nambucca Valley Council’s acting general manager.

The road is expected to be closed up until 24 December.

Nambucca Valley Mayor Gary Lee described the milestone as a ‘great achievement’, given the recent heavy rain. He said that despite the weather, the project is running to schedule six weeks after it began on 14 September.

During the closure of Boat Harbour Road, all vehicles travelling between Macksville and Taylors Arm are being detoured via Taylors Arm Road. The seven-kilometre detour has a reduced speed limit of 40kph.

Council’s roads crew recently graded Taylors Arm Road to ensure it can safely handle the extra traffic travelling between Macksville and Taylors Arm.

Motorists should also check Live Traffic or their mapping app before travelling for road closure and detour details.

Taylors Arm Road is not suitable for oversize or over-mass (OSOM) vehicles due to some of the road’s tighter curves.

Council has advised OSOM operators who intend to move a heavy load through Utungun or Taylors Arm areas during the Boat Harbour Road closure period to contact the council on 6568 0253 or email council@nambucca.nsw.gov.au prior to travel.
