Kangaroo grass rebounds on Nambucca Head’s Lions Lookout Headland

Regrowth of native kangaroo grass after bushfire on Lions Lookout Headland. Photo: Rory Kaine.

DEAR News Of The Area,

THIS photo shows the Kangaroo Grass (Themeda) looking good on the Lions Lookout Headland above Nambucca Surf Club.

The recent bushfire on the headland burnt the tall, rubbishy, weedy grasses, giving the native kangaroo grass a competitive advantage. Note the bare patches of soil between the clumps.

It is an area that the Council leaves purposely unmown, but not weeded.

Some of the young Banksia trees weren’t so lucky, although some may fight back.

It gives you an idea about the possibilities of a careful, cultural burn.

Regards,

Rory Kaine,

Nambucca Heads.
