Maras Creek Road fire trail upgraded in boost for emergency services

A KEY emergency route in Utungun is now back in top shape, with the Maras Creek Road fire trail in Ingalba Nature Reserve officially cleared and ready for use.

Member for Oxley Michael Kemp visited the site last week alongside Utungun RFS Captain Paul Sheadel and Lower North Coast RFS District Manager Chris Wilson to inspect the upgraded trail.

“This track is a lifeline for communities like Taylors Arm, Utungun and Thumb Creek, connecting them through to the Pacific Highway and giving locals a safer way out during emergencies,” Mr Kemp said.

“When you’re dealing with a fast-moving fire, access is everything – getting crews in quickly, getting people out safely, and being able to control the front.

“This trail, like many others, had been washed out and left overgrown, making that job far harder than it should be.

“I began advocating for roads like this back in 2023 to be reclassified under the Rural Fire Act and properly maintained.

“It’s great to see Maras Creek Road now officially included in the FAFT program, ensuring it stays in good condition into the future.

“It’s a strong result for the community and a big step forward for local emergency preparedness.”

Mr Kemp thanked the NSW Rural Fire Service, the Utungun Rural Fire Service, the Lower North Coast FAFT Committee, and Becker Earthmoving for their work delivering the project.
