National spotlight on Macksville Hospital’s leadership in veteran employment

MACKSVILLE District Hospital has proudly earned national recognition for its trailblazing work in supporting veteran employment, being named a finalist in the prestigious Prime Minister’s National Veteran Employment Awards.

Nominated in the category of Best Regional Veteran Employment Initiative, Macksville District is the first hospital in Australia to be acknowledged in this way.

While the hospital did not take home the top prize at the recent ceremony, its status as a finalist places it firmly on the national stage and shines a light on its outstanding commitment to inclusive employment practices.

The nomination acknowledges the hospital’s long-standing and evolving support for current and former members of the Australian Defence Force, highlighting its efforts to create a welcoming, respectful, and opportunity-rich workplace environment.

Jill Wong, Chief Executive of the Mid North Coast Local Health District (MNCLHD), said the recognition is a testament to the organisation’s values and deep respect for veterans.

“We are incredibly proud of Macksville District Hospital and the leadership shown by the team,” Ms Wong said.
“This recognition speaks to our commitment to ensuring veterans feel valued, supported and empowered in our workforce. “Being the first hospital in Australia to receive this level of acknowledgement is an outstanding achievement for our District.”

The award nomination reflects the collaborative efforts of staff, leadership, and key champions within the hospital and the broader health district, who have worked diligently to support veteran employment pathways.

Special recognition was given to Sarah Nixon and Mark Tyler for their leadership and unwavering dedication to advancing veteran engagement across MNCLHD.

Their contributions have been instrumental in positioning Macksville District Hospital as a national leader in veteran-inclusive employment.

This latest recognition adds to a growing list of achievements for the hospital, including becoming the first in Australia to be formally recognised as a Veteran Employment Supporter.

Macksville District Hospital and MNCLHD reaffirm their ongoing commitment to creating employment opportunities for veterans and fostering a workplace culture that values the unique skills, discipline, and service experience that veterans bring to civilian roles.
