Venturer Scouts shine at Dragon Skin challenge in Belanglo State Forest

NAMBUCCA Venturer Scouts outdid themselves at the Dragon Skin adventure challenge held over the Easter long weekend in Belanglo State Forest.

Dragon Skin is the premier event in the NSW Venturer Scout calendar, bringing together up to a thousand participants from across Australia.

Teams hike, navigate, and strategise their way through a network of activity bases, earning points not just for completion, but for enthusiasm, planning and teamwork.

“Safe to say, our Venturers ticked all those boxes,” Nambucca Valley Scout Group Leader Kim Thomson told News Of The Area.

The leadership could not be prouder of the efforts, achievements and attitude of the local scouts who “added a few glittery extras of their own and possibly invented a whole new category: competitive side-questing with interpretive dance”.

The Macksville-based group powered its way to ninth place out of 151 teams.

“Not bad for a team whose official name was ‘Where is my side quest?’ – a question they answered repeatedly… by creating their own,” Kim said.

Across the four-day Easter adventure they navigated the forest, tackling a huge range of activities testing everything from first aid and problem-solving to navigation, bushcraft and teamwork.

Making their time fun and entertaining, the Nambucca Valley Scouts didn’t just complete the challenges… they performed them.

The team choreographed their own dance routine and delivered it at every activity base.

“Imagine being a judge expecting a compass bearing… and receiving a full performance instead,” Kim said.

“And because that wasn’t enough, they ran their own parallel questline through their ‘Where is my side quest’ Instagram page, completing bonus challenges set by other teams along the way.

“Side quests within side quests… very on-brand,” Kim said.
