Yarrahapinni surfer Sandon Vowels qualifies for State Titles

YARRAHAPINNI surfer Sandon Vowels has qualified for the NSW State Titles, following a strong showing at a North Coast qualifier held on Sunday, 22 March at Emerald Beach.

A Surfing NSW Junior Regional Series event, the tournament was hosted by the Woolgoolga Boardriders Club and was open to athletes from Red Rock to Crescent Head.

Sandon was one of eight surfers competing in the under 16s boys division.

“I won my first heat with a score of 6.50 and 7.40, totalling at 13.90,” he told NOTA.

“I got second in the final with a 7.00 and an 8.23, a combination of 15.23.

“There was only a 0.40 points difference between me and first place, that was Hamish Harrigan.

“As I came second, I have now qualified for state titles.”

Several members of the Scotts Head Boardriders Club, of which Sandon is an active member, also competed, including his sister Avalon Vowels, Tarro Boxsell from Scotts Head and Myla and Jaggar March from Valla.

Tarro Boxsell finished fourth in the final, Myla March finished third, and Jaggar March finished eighth.

Avalon Vowels topped the under 18s girls division.

Sandon’s mum Crystal said the family was “stoked” with his results.

“It gains him qualification to the State Titles to be held in Coffs Harbour in May, which is the entry way to the Australian Titles later in the year.”
