THE Special Ks – Kerrie Eichorn and Karl Hobday – have the lead in the respective women’s and men’s club championships at Nambucca Heads Island Golf Course.
The 11-marker Eichorn carded rounds of 88 and 83 for a 171 total, four ahead of Deidre Fletcher (12), who was co-leader after the first round on Wednesday, 14 October before Eichorn turned up the dial two days later.
The women’s champs is over 54 holes, with the final round to be played on Wednesday, 21 October.
Hobday (6) is three clear at the halfway mark of the men’s after rounds of 76-77 from Keith Wallis (6) and Greg McCoy (7) on 156. Bryce McCarroll is one shot back in fourth.
Stormin’ Norman Devereaux (15) has a slashing seven-shot lead in B Grade from Peter Ryan (13). Peter Moxon (21) has a four-shot buffer in C Grade on 185 from Andrew Cuthbertson (21).
Jenny Thorne (26) heads the women’s Div 2 by a solitary shot from Susan Barnett (25). Cheryl Fortescue (34) is on 228, two better than the chasing Robyn Jones (34).
After a good drop of needed rain, the course was in mint condition with fair pins, but that didn’t stymie the calamity which comes with stroke play under the pressure cooker of clubland’s premier event of the year.
Les Mohr wracked up an easy eight on the last – a short par three – on Saturday. He was gnashing teeth and wringing hands in the clubhouse before Robert Reid chirped “hold my black beer, I can beat that”. He documented a 12 on the par five 11th, with three air swings before a reverse back-handed swipe as he emerged from a despicable place near the skinny drain to the right of the 12th tee.
On Saturday, a supercharged Ben Venner yelled to players getting ready in the carpark to “run while you still can” as he went from bunker to bunker on the par-three fifth before finding one he liked and spent some time in as he rumbled up a moose.
Men’s net daily winners:
A Grade: Toowoomba’s Jonathon Russell (5) from Brad Fortescue (6) on Saturday, and Daniel Wren (12) from Darrell Flanders (9) on Sunday. Gross winners – Andrew Dent and Karl Hobday.
B Grade: Tristram Edwards from Norman Devereaux on Saturday and Devereaux from Tom Wattison on Sunday. Gross winners – Peter Ryan (both days).
C Grade: Dom ‘the leopard’ Lambie (28) from Peter Klem-Goode (23) on Saturday and Andrew Cuthbertson (21) from Peter Moxon on Sunday. Gross winners – Kevin Wilson and Andrew Bagust.
Saturday NTP magnets were Edwards on 5 and 15, Matt Baker on 7, McCarroll on 8 and 18, and Peter Dawe scored the flatbread on 13. On Sunday it was Flanders on 5 and 18, Graham Watson on 7, Ken Klem on 8, Hobday on 13 for the pizza, and Peter Ryan on 15.
McCarroll – who, according to Australian Electoral Commission records, lists his address as The Island Golf Course – was on song with 37 points for the salute in Div 1 of the medley stableford on Thursday, 15 October.
He had 73 off the stick, including birds on 8 and 11, and his total was one better than runner-up Daniel Wassens (14) on 36 points.
Stephen Wood (25) from Peregian Golf Club on the Sunny Coast carded the hottest score of the day with 38 points, a couple clear of Paul Dyer (34).
El presidente Geoff Harris drained an anaconda on the opener for the prize pack, and pin pests were Wattison on 5, Neil Duffus on 7, Grant Ellis on 8 and Edwards on 15.
Catchya on The Island, where all kinds of funky stuff is forecast for the final two rounds of the men’s championships.
