Eichorn takes 2026 Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club women’s championship title

AFTER more hits in the 80s than Whitney Houston, Kerrie Eichorn has been crowned the women’s club champion at the Nambucca Heads Island Golf Club for 2026.

The 10-marker carded rounds of 88-83-81 for a 252 total to win the coveted Div 1 gross as the women were able to complete their three-round tournament as scheduled on Wednesday 21 October in an otherwise rain-hampered week.

If Eichorn wanted to dance with somebody, she didn’t have far to look as runner-up Deidre Fletcher (12 handicap) was rock solid with 88-87-83 for a 54-hole total of 258.

Skye Lacey (21) won the nett and continues her steady rise.

Sue Barnett (25) had rounds of 97-103-98 to collect the title in Div 2, two clear of Jenny Thorne (26) 102-97-101. Marilyn McNally (28) swept the nett.

Robyn Jones (34) has a laugh as big as her ticker and was a popular champion in Div 3 with 118-112-108 to sneak home by two from Cheryl Fortescue (34) 117-111-112. Jennifer Ainsworth (there’s a theme here with all three major Div 3 winners being on a 34 handicap) celebrated with the nett prize.

In the final 18 holes, daily gross and nett winners respectively were:

Div 1: Eichorn 81, Lacey 67

Div 2: Barnett 98, McNally 71; and

Div 3: Jones 108, Fiona Chaffey (41) 73.

Flag magnets on the last day went to Fletcher and Fortescue on 5, McNally on 13 and Lacey on 18 for the $44 Pro Pin.

The men’s club championships were not quite so lucky as the final 36 holes were punted to this weekend due to relentless, but needed and appreciated, rain.

The sole other comp during the week was the Nambucca Skins semi-finals on Sunday.

A field of 12 became nine – in three groups of three. Through to the grand final are reigning club champion (at least for now) Graham Watson, Peter Klem-Goode, Chris Knight and Ray Guiana.

Klem-Goode, with 13 Skins, showed zero compassion for his playing partner and sibling Ken Klem, who had to walk as carts were prohibited on the softer ground.

The well-draining course was in surprisingly good nick though the greens were furrier than a fox.

Catchya on The Island where if 36-holes of stroke play to conclude the men’s champs isn’t scary enough, you can get your spook on at the club’s Halloween party on Saturday night 31 October with a kids disco from 6-7pm and an adults rave from 8.30pm to the bewitching. Prizes for best dressed.
