THE Stuarts Point and District Community Organisation (SPaDCO) hosted an elegant afternoon tea designed to celebrate the diverse elder community on Friday, 13 March, during NSW Seniors Week.
The volunteer caterers and a team of helpers produced a fine fare of delights, impressing dignitaries such as Kempsey Shire Mayor Kinne Ring.
Entertainment was provided by Indigenous Elder Uncle James Dungay, who demonstrated eucalyptus‑leaf whistling.
A number of guests also attempted Mr Dungay’s technique with varying levels of success.
Brendan Seed, a representative for Cowper MP Pat Conaghan, told NOTA, “I was pleased to represent Pat at the SPaDCO Seniors Day afternoon tea as Pat was in transit returning from Parliament and unable to attend.
“The delicious homemade cooking and eucalyptus-leaf whistling demonstrations were a highlight of the afternoon. “James could certainly make those gum leaves sing!
“These special gatherings are a wonderful opportunity to bring the community together and reduce social isolation in regional areas. It was a pleasure to attend.”
SPaDCO has more community events in the pipeline, including community meetings, a kids film night and the release of their second anthology ‘Tell Your Tale’, a collection of local short stories.
