REACHING 104 years of age is a remarkable achievement, and for U3A Nambucca Valley life member Hazel Bow, it was also a wonderful opportunity to celebrate a lifetime of friendship, learning and community involvement.
Hazel recently celebrated her 104th birthday, or as it is said in Italian, “Centoquattresimo Compleanno”.
Although she had been unwell around the time of her birthday, fellow U3A members recently gathered to enjoy a belated celebration lunch with Hazel, who now resides at Riverside Gardens.
The gathering was a fitting tribute to a woman who has played an important role in the history of U3A Nambucca Valley for more than 25 years.
When the organisation was first established, Hazel founded the popular Italiano Per Piacere group, creating a welcoming place where people with a shared love of the Italian language could learn, practise and enjoy conversation together.
More than two decades later, the group continues to meet every Wednesday, a lasting testament to Hazel’s enthusiasm and commitment.
While she is no longer able to attend the weekly sessions, Hazel still enjoys catching up with members over lunch whenever she can, particularly for special occasions.
The recent celebration was another opportunity for friends to thank Hazel for everything she has contributed to the organisation over the years.
Hazel was awarded Life Membership of U3A Nambucca Valley in recognition of her outstanding contribution, unwavering support and long-standing commitment to the organisation and its members.
Her involvement has helped shape U3A into the vibrant community organisation it is today.
Members say Hazel embodies the U3A philosophy of bringing people together to learn, laugh and live.
Her life is a wonderful example of how remaining socially connected, continuing to learn and nurturing friendships can contribute to a long, fulfilling and happy life.
A spokesperson for the U3A Committee told News Of The Area, “Our members extend their heartfelt thanks to Hazel for her years of dedication and we wish her every happiness as she celebrates her extraordinary milestone, and we say Bravo to Hazel for a life well lived.”
For the many people whose lives Hazel has touched through U3A over the past quarter of a century, her 104th birthday was not only a celebration of longevity but also of a life dedicated to learning, and friendship.
