Coffs Coast Masters Cricket Club season under way

COFFS Coast Masters Cricket Club have kicked off their new season with their inaugural Over 50s team playing their first game.

Their debut was a 40-over match against Mid North Coast, played on Sunday, August 23, at Jim Stirling Oval in South Kempsey.

With some great local cricket talent on display, Coffs Coast Masters Over 50s came up against a formidable Mid North Coast Over 50s outfit.

Led by Mick Young, the Coffs Coast side managed to contain Mid North Coast to 168 from their 40 overs.

Young took 3-20 from his five overs, and Rob Symonds took 3-22 from his five overs.

Damian Senz (42) and Rob Symonds (21) got the Coffs Coast team off to a solid start in their batting innings, 3-80 at the drinks break.

Unfortunately, the Mid North Coast Captain, Mark Smee (2-22) and Nash (3/18) came on to bowl and restricted the scoring while taking valuable wickets, with the exception of Aaron Knowles (20 not out).

Coffs Coast Masters Cricket Club added the Over 50’s side to their Over 60s and Over 70s teams, with Masters Cricket one of the fastest growing team participation sports in Australia.

Coffs Coast Masters Over 50s player Mick Young said the chance to play with age appropriate peers was massively enjoyable.

“All of us have had many life experiences by now, playing cricket is one thing, but maybe as important is spending time with fellas of a similar age sharing stories and understanding everyone’s journey,” he said.

Coffs Coast Masters Cricket Club play their home games at the iconic Philip Hughes Memorial Oval in Macksville, and practice in Coffs Harbour’s Bray Street Nets every Wednesday and Friday throughout the year.

They are continually on the lookout for new players in all Masters age groups.
