Friendships, food and family: The legacy Of Lom Talay Thai

The closing of the Lom Talay Restaurant, in Nambucca Heads, will be lamented by its legion of loyal customers. Pictured are Mia Kelsey, Head Chef Peung, Jarin Kelsey, and Lily Kelsey.

FOR 13 years, the aromas of authentic Thai cuisine and the warmth of genuine hospitality have welcomed locals and visitors alike through the doors of Lom Talay Thai Restaurant in Nambucca Heads.

Now, one of the town’s most cherished dining institutions has quietly served its final meal, not because of financial pressures or a sale, but simply because it is time for owners Jarin and Bruce Kelsey to enjoy a well-earned retirement and spend more time with family.

Alongside daughters Lily and Mia, and Jarin’s niece and long-time chef Peung, the family has become much-loved members of the Nambucca Heads community.

While the decision to close was not an easy one, the family say they are looking forward to this next chapter.

With Lily studying law at the University of Queensland and Mia working with the Queensland Police in major event planning, both daughters are now based in Brisbane.

Jarin is also eager to spend more time with family in Thailand.

After spending 13 years behind the stove, Peung is planning to return home for at least four months and, with a smile, admitted she is looking forward to “not cooking”.

Looking back, the Kelsey family say it is the friendships they have formed that mean the most.

“It has been this wonderful community that have become our friends and customers that have become our favourite memories and the many young people that have come here to work,” they said.

Lily reflected on the many local teenagers who had worked at the restaurant over the years.

“We have had young people come to work here as casuals while they were at high school and their siblings have followed behind them.”

Jarin proudly noted that many of those former staff members have remained in contact and have gone on to become successful professionals.

Asked about the secret behind the restaurant’s enduring popularity, daughters Mia and Lily were quick to credit Peung’s cooking and their mother’s ability to make everyone feel welcome.

They said it was the incredible food produced by Peung and Jarin’s willingness to cater to customers’ individual tastes and changing plans, always with a smile, that inspired such loyalty among patrons.

The family also loved seeing visitors return year after year, often bringing friends and creating new connections.

“It has been lovely to know that the impact of this restaurant, Peung’s food and Mum’s hospitality has gone far beyond the Nambucca Valley.”

For Mia and Lily, who spent much of their childhood and teenage years around the restaurant, the experience was about much more than work.

“It never felt like an obligation to work here while we were growing up as we were surrounded by family and the wonderful community members and visitors who would come and dine here,” Mia said.

“So many people’s milestones were celebrated here and significant birthdays and anniversaries and we were always made to feel a part of it.”

Those celebrations became part of the fabric of the restaurant, with generations of families gathering around its tables to mark life’s special moments.

As they close the doors for the final time, the family have a simple message for the countless customers and friends who have supported them over the past 13 years.

“All of us would like to thank the community for always being pleasant, always being interested in us and they never made it feel like work.”

As news of the closure spreads, there will undoubtedly be a sense of sadness throughout the community.

But perhaps the greatest legacy of Lom Talay Thai is not just the meals that were shared, but the friendships that were formed and the memories that were made.

For many in Nambucca Heads, it was never just a restaurant.

It was family.
