DARRELL Flanders kissed a golf handicap goodbye and showed he thrives in a convection oven after posting a stonking score at the Nambucca Heads Island layout.
The once-was-9-marker scorched around in brutal conditions to card 44 points to win the Cubana Resort medley stableford Div 1 on Saturday, 10 January.
Flanders birdied 3, 11 and 17, with Day(light) second in the form of Simon (14 handicap) who blistered with 41 points including birds on 4, 12 and 15 and 78 off the stick.
Tiffany Paul (21) carded an excellent 39 points to take Div 2 from the in-form John Nebauer (20) on 37.
Anthony Buckley (25) ran riot on the back nine to take Div 3 – storming home with three pars, a bird on 15 and a wipe on the last – for 42 points.
Andrew Bagust (27) was runner-up with 37 points – an excellent return given the hot and windy conditions which fronted the later starters.
Shortland Waters’ Nick Goodfellow bagged the Ecomist longest putt on the opener while pins went to Bernie Dugdale on 5, Peter Thompson on 7, Stu Garvey on 8 and Buckley on 15.
Paul added to her prize kit with the Pizza This Pizza That on 13, while Muirfield Golf Club’s Nigel Black collected the $100 Pro Pin on 18.
Sue Brooks (14) is always thereabouts – on the leaderboard and working voluntarily for the club – and she found the boost button on 7 January to salute in the single stableford with 41 points.
79 off the stick and a bird on 7 saw Brooks home on a countback in Div 1 from Bonville’s Susan McWilliam (17).
Fiona Chaffey (38) parred the 10th and last to post 37 points for the win in Div 2.
Flag-botherers were Angela Paton on 5, Robyn Dyer on 8 and Narelle Delaney on 13. Georgina Riddington pursed the $28 Pro Pin on 18.
Chris Tinson (27) is baaack with a blast, carding 40 points to edge Toukley’s Michael Crompton (27) in Div 3 of the Cubana Resort medley stableford on Thursday, 8 January.
Dennis Ashton (19) also had 40 points to win Div 2 from James McIlveen (21) on 38.
Kurri Golf Club’s Cooper Vassella (10) posted 37 points to pip Queensland-bound (for a little while) Troy Herbert (2) by one.
Geoff Brooks railed the longest putt on the 1st and pins went to laser-like Ken Klem on 5, 8 and 15, and Deidre Fletcher on 7. Trevor Peck can look forward to one of Steve Ward’s finest frisbees after guiding it close on 13 and Colin Dunne pocketed the $85 Pro Pin.
Catchya on The Island where good people gather – testing golf, banter, prime steak or fish and chips, chilled chardonnay or tap beer on the big deck bang on the river.
