A SMILING assassin and a gunshot president make uneasy bedfellows, but that’s how it played out at the Nambucca Heads Island Golf Course on Saturday.
Ken Klem grins from go to whoa irrespective of how he’s scoring while Geoff Harris has committed hara-kiri to his handicap after back-to-back staunch scores.
They both returned 40 points to tie for the Div 1 win in the Pizza This Pizza That medley stableford, Klem (9 handicap) getting the pay day on countback from Harris (21).
Klem had 74 off the stick including birds on 10 and 17 for one under round the back, while Harris birdied the last.
Peter Moxon (22) also carded 40 points, winning Div 2 from Kay McGoldrick (34) on 38.
On the back of a frozen shoulder courtesy of bursitis, Chris Knight emerged from five months in the Mariana Trench with three birds, including tap-ins on 5 and 12, with 78 gross after double-bogeys on three of the first four.
The ball run went down to 35 points with James McIlveen the last to collect. The comp doubled as a qualifier for the men’s Top Gun shootout.
John McRae nailed the longest putt on the first for the Ecomist prize pack and pins went to Knight on 5, Kay McGoldrick on 7, Matt Dyer on 8 and McIlveen on 15. Scott Burley yummed the pizza on 13 and Andrew Bagust saved an otherwise tough day in the classroom with the $75 Pro Pin on the last.
Super Kiwi Steve Ward – one of the club’s strongest supporters through his pizza and pasta restaurant on Bowra St – dipped his hand into the pocket again to sponsor the medley stableford on Thursday 3 September.
Sydney-based Nambucca member Peter Sheridan (10) sheeted home with 38 points to win Div 1 on countback from club champion Graham Watson (6).
Sheridan wiped the 8th and 9th, birdied the 3rd and 14th and had a hole-in-one on 13. Dreamworld are considering naming their next rollercoaster in his honour.
It was also tighter than the Jenolan Caves for a Weight Watchers class in Div 2, with Trevor Hopkins (22) smoking with 41 points to win on countback from Harris (21, no more).
Hoppy had five pars and a bird on the 5th, while Harris had six pars and an inexplicable double-bogey on the last.
Ross Morpuss felined on the 1st with the longest putt and flag botherers were Kew’s Perry Harpur on 5, Michael Marshall on 7, Bryce McCarroll on 8, Sheridan with the ace on 13 for the gourmet flatbread, Peter Bush on 15, and Andrew Bagust banked the $70 Pro Pin on 18.
Congratulations to the Nambucca Skins semi-finalists with the event to be played on Sunday 1 November after the Club Champs.

Winner of each group will progress to the grand final and the clash for cash on Sunday 22 November.
