NAMBUCCA Heads teenager Matthew Jeffery is making a name for himself on the Australian chess scene following impressive performances in major tournaments this year.
In April, the 15-year-old travelled to Sydney to compete in the two-day Burwood ACF Tournament Classical.
On the opening day, he finished first with seven wins from eight games against strong competition.
The next day at the Burwood Saturday Rapid Tournament, Matthew placed second and took home prize money of $250.
Not content to rest on those impressive achievements, he travelled to Brisbane in May to compete in the prestigious, four-day 2026 Churchie International, which attracted a field of 180 talented players.
Finishing equal first among the unrated players, Matthew was placed equal 33rd overall.
Matthew’s parents spoke about a recent ‘light bulb moment’.
“We’d watched Matthew play at a high level online for some time,” said Matthew’s mum, Nikki.
“When he discovered a tournament was being held during a family visit to Adelaide, Matthew asked if he could compete.
“We were keen to give him the opportunity and he played exceptionally well. He has a remarkable understanding of the game.”
Matthew’s younger brother, Ethan, is also showing promise as a competitive chess player.
Matthew credits local chess club competitions for helping him develop and refine his game.
He plays at Nambucca Heads Chess Club, which meets at the Nambucca Heads RSL Club from 4pm on the last Monday of each month, and at Coffs Harbour Chess Club at Sawtell RSL Club from 6pm on Tuesdays.
Asked what he enjoys most about chess, Matthew said it’s problem-solving.
“It’s kind of like a big puzzle that you try to solve or simplify,” he said.
For anyone considering taking up chess, Matthew’s message was simple.
“Do it. It’s fun and easy to pick up.”
