ZUMBA is big in the Nambucca Valley. So when more than 40 members of Zumba Gold groups celebrated their 10th anniversary, they did it in style with a Masquerade Ball-themed party at Macksville Ex-Services Club.
Centre of attention were the groups’ two long-time instructors, Kerri Mergan, who has taught the Valla Rural and Nambucca Heads Zumba Gold group for 15 years, and Cheryl Summerville, who marked 10 years teaching classes at Macksville.
By sheer coincidence, the two women started their classes at the same time a decade ago.
For Ms Summerville, Zumba offers exercise, fun and friendships.
“It’s the joy of dance: music makes you feel so good,” she said.
“We’re very much a social group too.
“I’ve made the most wonderful friends over the last 10 years.”
Gold is a low-impact form of Zumba, making it perfect for older women.
Macksville member Gai McKay helped organise the anniversary celebration.
She says the two instructors give much more than teaching their classes each week.
“They elevate the spirit and mood of everyone who takes part, supporting the women of the valley through dance,” Ms McKay said.
“We laugh our way through every class.”
One highlight of the year was the recent presentation by Member for Oxley Michael Kemp of a Community Award to Nambucca Valley Zumba Gold.
The award recognised the $1400 the women raised for Ronald McDonald House through a Dance Party last October.
Ms Summerville thanked the ex-services club for supporting Zumba Gold for nine of its 10 years in Macksville.
“The club’s been so supportive,” she said.
“They let us in for our 9am weekly class before the club even opens for the day.”
