MELANOMA survivor and Cancer Council fundraiser Colin ‘Wormo’ Wormleaton should hang his head in shame.
The talented golfer’s handicap had drifted out to 10, making him a contestant for sandbagger of the year for 2026.
But he shot himself in the foot – which was once constantly exposed on the Nambucca Heads Island Golf Course due to a medical condition – as he crushed the field to win the Nambucca Liquor men’s Monthly Medal on Saturday.
Wormo birdied the 3rd and 15th and had 77 off the stick for the best nett of the day with 67 to collect in A Grade, three clear of Bryce McCarroll (5 handicap). Greg McCoy (6) picked up the gross prize with 77.
Matt Dyer (14) was travelling so well after only 46 shots through the first 10 holes before an atrocious Moose of 10 on the 11th. Please explain. He somehow recovered from that ramming to run home with two pars, four bogeys and a bird on the last for 84 off the bat and the B Grade Medal win with 70 nett.
Steve Frost (14) was runner-up three back and Midlands Golf Club’s Sean Parnell (the third of the 14-markers on the podium) won the gross on 88.
David Bartos (21) parred 7, 15 and 16 on his merry way to 71 nett for the dance in C Grade, two clear of Peter Klem-Goode. Club President Geoff Harris (21 – you can’t be serious) carded 97 honest ones for the gross prize.
Club Champion Graham Watson hogged the nearest the pins on 5 and 7, Dyer also a brace on 8 and 18 ($60 Pro Pin), and Peter Farrell on 15 as well as the longest putt on the 1st for the Ecomist prize pack. Greens team champion Dan Wren will eat well courtesy of the Pizza This Pizza That voucher on 13.
Campbelltown’s Richard Senkowski (9) thrived on The Island with 36 points to nail Div 1 of the Soulitude Health stableford on Thursday 2 July. Local Garry Johnstone (14) showed he is building, one point back, for runner-up.
Donald Lavery (33) returned 36 points for the Div 2 salute on a countback from Craig Riddington (24).
John Fortescue found nothing but cup from a distance for the prize on 1 and pin botherers were Wayne Roberts on 5, Ken Klem on 7, Tristram Edwards on 8 and Ken Marriott on 15. Johnstone will hope the pizza is still hot by the time he gets back to Bowraville, or dine in, after hitting it handy on 13 and Daniel Phelps banked a tidy $70 courtesy of the Pro Pin on the last.
Gun golfer Kerrie Eichorn (9) had 34 points to take Div 1 of the stableford competition on Wednesday 1 July on countback from Dianne O’Leary (17).
Eichorn scorched home with 39 round the back, including five pars.
Linda Piccin (once was 36) had the best round of the day with 38 points to sweep Div 2, four better than Jennifer Johnston (30).
Pins on the 5th went to Sue Brooks and Narelle Delaney, Piccin on 13 and Judith Boyle is $37 the richer after scoring the Pro Pin on 18.
A small field of 15 contested the Nambucca Heads News stableford on Tuesday 30 June (grand final day for bean counters). Michael Tarleton (21) took the honours on 34 points.
Catchya on The Island where the championship 18-hole layout is in great shape, or you can chillax in the warm clubhouse where the welcomes are as big as the schnitties and steaks.
