New mower for Nambucca Valley Phoenix crew

THE Nambucca Heads Lions Club has provided funding to purchase a brand new mower for Nambucca Valley Phoenix’s mowing crew, which was officially handed over in a ceremony last month.

The Phoenix’s Supported Employment program mows more than 40 properties around Bowraville, employing four staff including three participants with disability.

These properties include the homes of elderly residents and NDIS recipients, as well as numerous public spaces.

After the crew’s old mower broke down in January, Phoenix manager Natalie Straney did not know who to turn to.

In the absence of a ride-on, Natalie said the crew was “tirelessly push-mowing to complete their Wednesday-Friday work schedule”.

Seeking support, Natalie made a post on Facebook and the Nambucca Heads Lions stepped in, successfully applying to the Lions Club Foundation for a grant of $5000.

The local Lions club contributed the remaining funds to purchase a new John Deere ride-on mower for almost $8000.

In a ceremony last month, representatives from the Lions Club officially handed over the new vehicle before enjoying refreshments and mingling with the staff at Phoenix Gallery and Café.

“The ride-on lawn mower handover at Phoenix was a highlight to our day,” said Lions Club President Grahame Beatton.

“We sincerely appreciate the hard working (mowing) team and our members were deeply impressed by Phoenix’s meaningful contributions to the community.”
