BOWRAVILLE Bowls Club held their A and B grade singles championship finals at the Bowra Sports Hub on Sunday, 12 July.
John “Cocko” Cochrane is the new major singles champion of the Bowraville Bowls Club, with a resounding win over Peter “Nobby” Carlow. Unflappable, totally focused and precise draw bowling saw Cochrane lead from the start and he never looked back.
With Cocko leading 11-4 and 16-8, Nobby finally found his length and rhythm to reduce the lead to 16-14.
John extended his lead on the next two ends, picking up 2 and 4 to extend the lead to 22-14.
Down 23-18, Nobby drew four shots with precise draw bowls but Cochrane still had one bowl left to play and what a wonderful shot he played.
Up into the head with beautiful placement saw him draw the shot by the smallest of margins to go to 24-18 lead.
Still well focused, he got the shot next end to win 25-18.
The entertaining final was applauded by the gallery, with Nobby saying after the game: “He was just too good and played exceptional bowls. He deserved the win”.
In the minor singles final, Mike Oldham came out victorious. Mike is a relatively new bowler after having to give up his love of golf, because of a severe foot injury after falling off a roof.
He has only been bowling a few years and he took the minor title over Tracey Armes with a final score of 25-17.
The game was close through 20 ends of play, with the lead regularly changing hands before Mike picked up his second four-point end of the game to go 23-16 up.
Tracey picked up a point next end before Mike took the championship the next end.
Well done to both players for putting on a fine performance.
The Zone 7 RSL Bowls Club will be holding their next “Get Together Day” at the Bowra Sports Hub on Monday, July 27.
Around 80 bowlers are expected to converge on the greens.
This is always a wonderful day with players from Grafton, Yamba, Woolgoolga, Macksville, Nambuca and of course, Bowraville.
Bowra will be hosting this day on behalf of Macksville.
